#1 Presente belongs to the simple tenses group, which means that all of the inflected forms are one word long. There are also compound (compuesto) tenses in the Spanish language, where each conjugated verb form consists of two words.
#2 The verb tratar has regular conjugation in the Presente tense of the Indicativo mood. It means this verb follows the basic rules for its group (-ar) without exceptions.
#3 The basis for the conjugation in this tense is the stem of the verb, so we have to begin by splitting the infinitive into a stem and an ending. It’s easy to do. Just remove two letters from the end of the infinitive form to get the ending — one of -ar, -er or -ir. What’s left is the stem.
#4 So for our verb:
- the stem is: trat-
- and the ending is: -ar
#5 Use the stem trat- in each person as the basis for the conjugations, the common prefix that each of the forms begins with.
#6 Next, add to this regular stem the endings specific to each person.
#7 Each grammatical person has a specific ending in each of the three conjugation groups -ar, -er, -ir.
#8 Add the regular ending -o for the first person singular to create trato:
- yo trato
#9 And again add the regular ending -as for the second person singular to create tratas:
- tú tratas
#10 Once more add the regular ending -a for the third person singular to create trata:
- él trata
- ella trata
- usted trata
#11 And similarly add the regular ending -amos for the first person plural to create tratamos:
- nosotros tratamos
- nosotras tratamos
#12 Like previously add the regular ending -áis for the second person plural to create tratáis:
- vosotros tratáis
- vosotras tratáis
#13 One more time add the regular ending -an for the third person plural to create tratan:
- ellos tratan
- ellas tratan
- ustedes tratan
