Step by step instructions

Most forms of the verb oír in the Presente tense of the Indicativo mood are regular, but not all. One exception is the first person singular, which has an irregular form. There are also four spelling corrections needed. The spelling corrections are usually not considered to be irregularities because they are predictable and often happen only in spelling to match the pronounced forms. For example that includes changes needed to keep the same consonant sound before the letters e/i and a/o which influence the pronunciation of c, g, z and others. Other corrections are accent changes, adding or dropping letters, etc.
The basis for the conjugation of this verb is its stem, so we have to start by splitting the infinitive into a stem and an ending. It’s really easy to do – simply remove two letters from the end of the infinitive and you have the ending – one of -ar, -er, -ir. What’s left is the stem.

So in case of the verb oír it’s easy to see that:
  • the stem is: o-
  • and the ending is: -ír
Image of o ír
Image of o- Use the stem o- in each person as the basis for conjugation, the common prefix or root that each of the forms begins with.
Next, add to this regular stem the endings specific to each person. Check out the image showing all the endings. Notice both the shapes and colors of the letters. They are arranged to help you find patterns and make it easier to remember these endings.

Each grammatical person has a specific ending in each of the three conjugation groups -ar, -er, -ir
Image of oigo The first person singular is irregular in this tense and needs to be memorized. It is oigo
Add the regular ending -es for the second person singular to get oesImage of -es
Image of + y !! A spelling correction is necessary here.

A weak u followed by a strong a/e/o in a single syllable form a diphtong. It means the u would lose a distinct sound in pronunciation and the word formed would not sound similar to the infinitive any more. For that reason, to match the pronunciation, we need to add the letter y between the vowels.

A diphtong is actually present in English as well, e.g. in words like cloud, feith, main.

So add y between the vowels to get oyes.
Like previously add the regular ending -e for the third person singular to get oeImage of -e
Image of + y !! Like previously a spelling correction is necessary here, so add y between the vowels to get oye.
And one more time add the regular ending -imos for the first person plural to get oimosImage of -imos
Image of i => í !!! And again a spelling correction is necessary here, so add the accent over i to get oímos.
As before add the regular ending -ís for the second person plural to get oísImage of -ís
Image of -en Again add the regular ending -en for the third person plural to get oen
And one more time a spelling correction is necessary here, so add y between the vowels to get oyen.Image of + y !!

That’s it! The conjugation is now done. But don’t end your session yet – it is very important to repeat and practice the material in order to retain it. Check below for suggestions.
