How to translate Presente to English
Notice that the phrases in English provided below next to each conjugation are not direct translations from Spanish to English. They are usually the closest general equivalents. The example differences are:- In Spanish conjugation, there is the form usted in the third person singular. But this person does not translate to the English third person singular. It translates to the so called formal you and uses the inflected form which is most often represented as he/she/it in English conjugation charts.
- Similar situation happens in the third person plural, where ustedes translates to the English plural formal you but uses the form which corresponds to the they form in English.
- Tenses are used differently in Spanish and English, so the actual translation should always take into account the context and focus on translating the meaning, not just words.
- In both languages each verb may have multiple meanings and not every meaning translates directly to the other language. Here also, the context and focusing on the particular meaning helps to create the most accurate translation.
The Spanish Presente de Indicativo tense translates to one of the following:
- The English Present tense, for instance: ella envíashe bundles off
- The English Present Progressive (or Present Continuous) tense, for instance:ahora mismo tú envíasyou are bundling off right now
Notice that the Spanish equivalent of the Present Progressive also exists and is in common use – that’s Presente Progresivo (a.k.a. Presente Continuo).

Presente belongs to the simple tenses group, which means that all of its conjugated forms are one word long. There are also compound (compuesto) tenses in Spanish language, where each conjugated verb form consists of two words. The verb enviar in the Presente tense of the Indicativo mood conjugates following the normal rules for its conjugation group (-ar), but requires four spelling corrections. The spelling corrections are in most cases not considered to be irregularities as they are predictable and often happen only in spelling to match the pronounced forms. For example that includes modifications necessary to keep the same consonant sound before the letters e/i and a/o which influence the pronunciation of c, g, z and others. Other corrections are accent changes, adding or dropping letters, etc. The basis for this conjugation is the stem of the verb, so we have to start by splitting the infinitive into a stem and an ending. It’s very easy to do. Just remove two letters from the end of the infinitive and you have the ending — one of -ar, -er or -ir. What’s left is the stem. So for enviar:- the stem is: envi-
- and the ending is: -ar
- yo envio – I bundle off
This verb belongs to the group which in the infinitive form contains a diphthong. It means a weak vowel i/u and a strong vowel a/e/o are combined in a single syllable giving a sound which begins as one vowel and moves towards the other. English also has it in words like: cloud, coin.
In this verb group the weak vowel is stressed in pronunciation, so to preserve it in writing (avoiding the diphthong) we need to add an accent. So add the accent to get envío:
- yo envío – I bundle off
- tú envias – you bundle off
- tú envías – you bundle off
- él envia – he bundles off
- ella envia – she bundles off
- usted envia – (formal) you bundle off
- él envía – he bundles off
- ella envía – she bundles off
- usted envía – (formal) you bundle off
- nosotros enviamos – we bundle off
- nosotras enviamos – (feminine) we bundle off
- vosotros enviáis – (plural) you bundle off
- vosotras enviáis – (feminine, plural) you bundle off
- ellos envian – they bundle off
- ellas envian – (feminine) they bundle off
- ustedes envian – (formal, plural) you bundle off
- ellos envían – they bundle off
- ellas envían – (feminine) they bundle off
- ustedes envían – (formal, plural) you bundle off
This is it! The conjugation is now complete. Put together, the conjugation chart looks like this:
yo | envío | I bundle off |
tú | envías | you bundle off |
él/ella/usted | envía | he/she/it bundles off |
nosotros/nosotras | enviamos | we bundle off |
vosotros/vosotras | enviáis | you bundle off |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | envían | they bundle off |
